HUF has offered the 100% FREE Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) to the low to moderate income communities of Broward County for more than 13 years. IRS-Certified Volunteer Tax preparers assist individuals and families to identify tax credits they are eligible for in order to maximize return refunds and bring critical dollars back to the community most in need. The services are provided from numerous community sites and offered in three languages - English, Spanish, Haitian-Creole and Sign Language at the (Center for Independent Living).

The IRS recently reported that since its inception in 2003, the VITA program in Broward County has brought back $475 million in tax refunds to the community!

2015 Impact

o    Served 5,513 low to moderate income clients

o    Ran 15 tax sites throughout Broward County

o    $5.7 million in tax refunds to families and Broward County

o    Additional savings $1.4 million in tax preparation costs to the clients

·         More than 80 trained and IRS-certified volunteers donate 40 hours of their time to the community

Key Program Funding Partners

In Broward County, VITA/EITC services are made possible through funding and leadership from the Children’s Services Council of Broward County (CSC), the IRS and the United Way of Broward County. Other key funding partners include: Bank of America, Baptist Health South Florida, SunTrust and Third Federal Savings & Loan.

The VITA program coalition is led by Hispanic Unity of Florida along with Community Access Center. Other key partners include: 211 Broward, Broward College, Broward County’s Family Success Administration, Broward County Libraries, DeVry University, HandsOn Broward, Nova Southeastern University, Sheridan Technical College.

Hispanic Unity of Florida: Client Stories

Hispanic Unity was founded more than 34 years ago by community leaders to ease the acculturation transition for newcomers from other nations. Today this nonprofit provides assistance through 12 programs and 30+ services, in four languages, to Broward's diverse community. Hispanic Unity remains the county's largest agency dedicated to the immigrant population, providing them with the tools they need to build a new life. In 2015, the agency served 17,000+ clients, from toddlers to adults.
