Feed A Friend, Gloria and Emilio Estefan's 7th Thanksgiving event, Bongos at Seminole Hard Rock 

Thank you to Gloria and Emilio Estefan for inviting Hispanic Unity and more than 300 of its clients to join them for a fantastic South Florida Thanksgiving meal at Bongos at Seminole Hard Rock. Shout out to Ana Maria Ordonez for doing a fantastic job of coordinating the event. And, big thanks as well to Hy Montero, HUF Board Member Emeritus, Lucia Montero and son Patric LaFevers for volunteering. The event sponsors included HUF funding partners, Florida Blue and Baptist Health. Best as well to Mayra Hernandez, 20+year volunteer and friend of Hispanic Unity seen below representing Winn Dixie through St. John's Partners a marketing firm. 

 

     

 

The Unity 4Kids children were the focus of an el Sentinel story on the holidays. (Click Read More to read the story.) The children are part of Hispanic Unity's 5-Star preschool. HUF CEO shared with readers how they can become involved in the community by sharing their  talent and time with organizations or causes that touch their heart. Hispanic - and bilingual volunteers - are highly prized by South Florida nonprofits. Ms. Bacallao thanked the individuals and organizations that supported this year's Unity 4Kids Holiday Celebration including: FPL for underwriting the holiday event,  as well as: Ana G. Mendez University System Staff,  Zaida, Angelica and Juan Carlos Arias who brought in the  Southeast Florida Girl Scouts Service Unit,  University School of NSU and their Diversity Club & Dr. Judith Roberts, Hispanic Unity of Florida Board Members and Jose and Winiela Zambrano. 

Hispanic Unity recibe $1.6 millones para su programa del Centro para Familias Trabajadoras

            Hispanic Unity of Florida, una organización comunitaria basada en el Sur de Florida, anunció hoy que es la recipiente de una subvención de más de $1 millón de parte de The Jim Moran Foundation para su programa del Centro para Familias Trabajadoras (Center for Working Families o “CWF” en inglés) a distribuirse durante los tres próximos años. La organización también anunció una subvención de $550,000 de parte de United Way of Broward County para el mismo programa y también por un periodo de tres años.

Hispanic Unity Receives $1.6 Million for Center for Working Families Program  

Hispanic Unity of Florida (HUF), a South Florida-based community organization announced today a  grant of more than $1 million from The Jim Moran Foundation to fund the Center for Working Families (CWF) program over the next three years. The organization also announced a $555,000 grant from United Way of Broward County for the same program, also for a three-year period.

Hispanic Unity's President/CEO, Josie Bacallao, along with former US Treasurer, Anna Cabral and Prudential executives were on a recent panel speaking about Prudential's Hispanic American Financial Study. The panel was part of a live stream press conference and media interview on the topic.

Hispanic Unity, through a partnership with Broward Regional Health Planning Council, is now a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and designated Certified Application Counselor (“CAC”) organization. Two Certified Application Counselors assist clients in navigating the Health Marketplace. We work with them to create an account, explore, pick a plan and apply for healthcare.  The application deadline is March 31, 2014.

On October 14, Hispanic Unity of Florida’s (HUF) Unity 4Teens before/after school program participants will take over the City of Hollywood Commission Chamber. During a mock commission meeting the students will represent city commissioners, as well as citizens, debating the merits of anti-gun violence legislation.  The project called, TAGS United: “Teens Against Gun Shots” is a civic engagement project created as a memorial to Daniel Torres,  a student who lost his life to gun violence.
